A cow with an ornamental cow-bell.
This photo was
taken on March 7, 2003 at the Salon de l'agriculture (Agriculture Expo) in
Paris, France. The animals presented tend to be exceptional specimens, and
are groomed and prepared in order to offer a nicer outlook.

Editor's note: In many parts of the world, the varieties of dairy cattle
usually raised seem to have something similar to the fowls' "pecking
order", a sort of hierarchy in which one cow in each herd is established as
more or less permanent leader (whether by self-appointed usurpation or
unanimous unspoken agreement of the rest is not clear). In any case,
that's the one the farmer puts the bell on, because if he needs to find the
herd, he only needs to find that one and the rest will almost invariably be
there. This has led to the expression in some cultures of calling anyone
who wants to monopolize things: "The Bell Cow".
